Harriet Beecher Stowe
13/06/1811 - 30/06/1896Harriet Beecher Stowe was an American author and abolitionist, whose novel 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' (1852) attacked the cruelty of slavery; it reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential, particularly among British readers. She graduated from the Hartford Female Seminary run by her elder sister Catharine. In 1832, she and her family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she met a number of African Americans who had escaped slavery and this experience put her in touch with the realities of slavery.United States
