08/07/1775 - 13/05/1818Matthew Gregory Lewis was an English novelist and dramatist, he is often referred to as 'Monk' Lewis, because of the success of his 1796 Gothic novel, The Monk. He also worked as a diplomat and was an owner of slaves, deriving considerable part of his income from his Jamaican plantation.Northern Ireland
