William Dean Howells

28/02/1837 - 10/05/1920William Dean Howells was an American realist novelist, literary critic, and playwright, known for his novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria. He was also an ardent advocate of social reform. He was recognized, with Henry James and Mark Twain, as one of the major figures in American literature during the 19th century.
